Protected Persons & Convention Refugees
Canada’s Immigration Law offers protection to people in Canada who fear persecution and are unwilling or unable to return to their country of origin because of a well founded fear. Protected persons are those who cannot return to their country due to danger of torture, risk to their life or of cruel and unusual treatment or punishment. The IRB decides who is a Convention Refugee or a person in need of protection.
Refugees can be accepted under the government’s resettlement program. These refugees are either brought from abroad, sponsored by groups or claim refugee status in Canada.
You have to be eligible before your application is referred to the IRB. |
